Breeding Real Quarter Horses for Real Quarter Horse People!

Breeding Policy

A good business reputation does not spring up overnight, but grows slowly and soundly over time because it is rooted in the solid ground of "Customer Satisfaction."  Anderson Quarter Horses believes in honesty and integrity in all sales of AQH Horses. Both the horse and the customer are of paramount importance. We couldn't - and wouldn't - do business any other way!

Anderson Quarter Horses has enlisted a breeding policy that ensures the health and safety of the mare through standardized

breeding methods and practices.  Toward that end, strict aseptic technique is adhered to at all times.   The following outline describes AQH's breeding standards:

  1. Discussion with owner of Mare's reproductive history and health requirements (see STALLION CONTRACT.)

  2. Evaluation and maintenance of the Mare's nutritional status, with implementation of daily adjustments to feed and exercise regimen, as necessary, prior to breeding.

  3. Introduction of the Mare to both the breeding and housing facilities for familiarity prior to breeding.

  4. Introduction of the Stallion to the Mare through adjacent, but separate turn-outs on a daily basis.

  5. Management of the Mare's estrus cycle with careful and regular teasing 2 x daily during her stay.*

* Careful management of Mare's estrus cycle includes:

Any needed veterinary reproductive work such as palpations, ultrasounds, uterine infusions, and/or reproductive hormones as prescribed and administered by our Licensed Veterinarian, or the on-staff reproductive veterinarians at Cornell University Large Animal Hospital.

  1. Maintenance of a partition throughout the teasing routine.

  2. Preparation of both the Mare and Stallion at the same time which includes:

  • Completely wrapping the Mare's tail in a surgical wrap (track bandage).

  • Disinfecting the Mare's vaginal area and hindquarters.

  • Disinfecting the Stallion's genitalia and surrounding area.

  • Thorough rinsing of both Mare and Stallion (AQH uses mild soap and clean lukewarm water per industry standards).

  1. Efficient hand-breeding by competent, experienced handlers utilizing the breeding bay or maiden mare area of the equine barn (if required) to ensure a successful, natural cover. Presently, MR MAGIC ZIP's conception rate is 98% (compared to the "industry standard" of 55-60%), including maiden mares, aged mares, mares with or without fertility problems, open brood mares, and lactating mares with foals at their sides.

NOTES ~ ADDENDA

Note: AQH currently does NOT ship semen.  Instead, we provide an equine-friendly environment in which to breed and we follow strict disinfecting steps as described in the aforementioned policy. We recommend for novice breeders the book, Breeding Management & Foal Development, by the research staff of Equine Research , Inc., Grand Prairie, Texas, from whom our steps our patterned after.
